Using this chain as an example: Oregon 72CJ (3/8″ X .050) Square Chisel Full Skip Chain

72 → Series number

C → Cutter style

J → Grind style

3/8″ Pitch → The spacing between the drive links (the “teeth” that ride in the bar groove)

.050 Gauge → Gauge is the thickness of the drive link (the part that fits in your bar’s groove).
